The broadsword is a traditional weapon popular in areas ofBeijingand Tianjin in ancient times.

The broadsword from the Hui ethnic group in Tianjin was first widely known in the earlyMing Dynasty(1368-1644). It is said that a battle-scarred Hui general named Cao under the Ming EmperorZhu Diloved using a broadsword that weighed about 30 kilograms. He moved his family to Tianjin after his army captured it in the coup designated to help Zhu Di take the throne. Ever since then, the tradition of the Cao Family Broadsword was handed down from one generation to the next in Tianjin.

In modern times, the descendant of the Cao family named Cao Jinzao used a broadsword that weighed 80 kilograms. He also absorbed some martial arts from ShaolinKungfuand created the Seventy-two Styles of Interlinked Boxing. His son founded the first Hui Broadsword Martial Arts Gym in Tianjin.
