Martial arts in Cangzhou can be traced back to theSpring and Autumn Period(770-476 BC). In the past Cangzhou was of strategic significance as it guarded the route to Beijing and Tianjin. This military status nurtured the martial spirit of locals. Cangzhou has also been a place of exile for military miscreants, which further strengthened its martial spirit. As the Cangzhou people had a reputation for being just and respectful to warriors and those versed in martial arts, manykungfumasters and knight-errants that fell out of favor found shelter in Cangzhou, where they passed on their skills. Hence, it is called the "home of martial arts."

Today 53 types of martial arts are practiced in Cangzhou. Meng Village Baji Boxing and Cangzhou Pigua Boxing are among China's ten representative boxing schools, and are included in standard exercises for international martial arts competitions.

Cangzhou City, the famous hometown of Chinese martial arts, has a galaxy of talent and various sects, fostering many celebrities throughout history, like Huo Yuanjia and Wang Ziping.

Cangzhou has more than 100 martial arts schools and clubs. The Martial Arts Festival is held in Cangzhou in October of every other year to expand martial arts culture.
