February 5 saw the opening night of the contemporary ballet Jane Eyre after a year’s preparation by the Shanghai Grand Theater and German choreographer Patrick De Bana. Based on Charlotte Bronte’s gothic novel, the ballet highlights the character Bertha Mason-archetypal “mad woman in the attic,” whose exotic origins render her a victim to cold Victoria mores. The simple yet creative theatrical design and expressive contemporary ballet language eloquently depict the markedly different characteristics of Jane, Rochester and Bertha, strengthening the twisted emotional ties among the three.
