At the age of 18, Piano soloist Li Yundi rose to instant stardom with his victory at the 2000 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland, where he became the youngest person ever to win the competition, and the first Chinese citizen. He is now counted among the most acclaimed classical pianists of his generation. His interpretations of Beethoven’s most romantic works, namely the Moonlight, Pathétique and Appassionata sonatas have won him legions of fans. Beethoven composed these three pieces during a severe bout of tinnitus. The great composer’s passion is still evident in the music, however, and it has become a test for later pianists to comprehend, interpret and draw out the genius of the sonatas.
