19th Beijing International Book Fair underway

The annual Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) will be held from August 29 to September 2, announced at a press conference organized by the organizing committee last week.

The 2012 BIBF, the 19th activity, is scheduled to be held at China International Exhibition Center in Beijing's Shunyi district, occupying an exhibition area of 53,600 square meters.

BIBF is co-organized by a number of committees, including Administration of Press and Publication of the People's Republic of China, State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China, Ministry of Education, and CNPIE.

Zhang Yanbin, an official at the State Council Information Office, Liu Bogen, general manager of CNPIE, Zhao Xiuling from General Administration of Press and Publication, and Kim Seung-il from South Korea's executive committee for the BIBF, spoke at the press conference.

According to Liu, over 2,000 publishing companies from 63 countries and regions applied for exhibitions. Nineteen countries, including the UK, German, Japan and France, will have their own exhibition booths.

Three Latin American countries, Argentina, Mexico and Ecuador will participate for the first time.

South Korea will attend the 19th BIBF as a Country of Honor, commemorating the 20th anniversary since China and South Korean established diplomatic relations. With an exhibition area of 2,000 square meters, South Korea will organize 63 publishing houses and 13 writers.

Digital publishing will be a feature of this year's BIBF, as e-books are playing an increasingly important role in people's lives.

Digital publishers from countries like the UK, US and India will share ideas about pricing, copy right and government funding in the age of digital media.

There will also be performances, forums, and other cultural activities at the BIBF, which South Korea will take a large part.
