The 3rd China International Violin Competition came to a close on the night of Oct 24 in Qingdao, Shandong province with a Korean violinist claiming the top prize.
Six violinists from China, South Korea and Russia competed in the finals, performing concertos with an orchestra. In addition, every contestant was required to play the compulsory concerto “The Butterfly Lovers”, based on a Chinese love story similar to Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. It was the first time for a Chinese classical song to be defined as the competition’s compulsory concerto. It was also a big challenge for foreign contestants to play the piece very well.
At the end of the competition, South Korea’s Bomsori Kim took first prize, with China’s Jia Tianyun placing second, followed by Korean Marisol Lee in third.
“I have read many materials and watched some videos about “The Butterfly Lovers” in preparation of playing the concerto. I heard a long time ago that it is a traditional Chinese love story, which is very beautiful, and I like it very much,” Bomsori Kim said.
“We would like to provide a platform where the contestants can learn more about the Chinese music, and share it with people all over the world,” noted Hu Kun, the president of the judging panel.
This year’s competition attracted 114 contestants from more than 20 countries, with the number of applicants increasing remarkably compared to the previous two events.
Compared with judging panels in the past that only consisted of violinists, this year’s panel was made up of violinists, composers, pianists, conductors and experts from various musical fields, which aimed to provide a more comprehensive and fair judgment of the contestants’ overall competence.
“We not only pay attention to the contestants’ techniques and skills, but also attach importance to their ability to maintain a solo career after the competition. We will see whether the contestants can turn into real artists who are appreciated by the audience, the media, the broker firm and the record company,” added Hu Kun.
China International Violin Competition (Qingdao), held every three years, is one of the three international music competitions under the auspices of Ministry of Culture of the PRC. The first China International Violin Competition, presented by Qingdao Municipal People’s Government, was held in September of 2005. The international music world has a good opinion of the competition because of its international authority. Its precise and rigorous organization makes Qingdao become the permanent host city for China International Violin Competition.
