Beijing Dialect Classic Rickshaw Boy Restaged

Xiangzi is hard-working, assertive and aggressive. His greatest wish is to obtain a rickshaw with his own efforts and become a “decent” driver. To this end, he rents a rickshaw from Renhe Rickshaw Agency run by Fourth Master Liu. He works hard for three years, and finally makes money and obtains a new rickshaw. But he is caught by soldiers to become able-bodied man with his rickshaw soon. When Xiangzi escapes, he pulls three camels to leave and sells them at the price of 30 silver dollars. From then on, he is nicknamed as “Camel Xiangzi”, who goes back to Renhe Rickshaw Agency.

Fourth Master Liu’s daughter Huniu, who is old maid at 30, falls in love with Xiangzi. Despite the opposition from father, Huniu is still married with Xiangzi. Fourth Master Liu fails to find his daughter. He secretly sells Renhe Rickshaw Agency, and runs away with the money alone.

Xiangzi and Huniu buy a new rickshaw, and enjoy a short happy life. But good time doesn’t last long, because Huniu suffers from post-natal illness and dies with her child. In order to cure Huniu, Xiangzi secures rickshaw at pawn. Drawing water with a sieve, Xiangzi turns a single person again.

Xiangzi sees rigors of life from numerous shocks, and forces him to live like the camel, “Regardless of heavy load and far distance, brave people cannot get down.” He will doggedly keep going on life road...
