Preface

The Chinese ceramics, originated in prehistoric period, was the powerful means that shaped the nation and was instrumental in disseminating its civilization. China, the name of this nation, connotes porcelain in many languages.

The exhibition "CHINA TODAY - Modern Development of An Ancient Art" comprises fifty-odd pieces of contemporary ceramic works of distinctive styles, the selection of which was commissioned by China's Ministry of Culture, and conducted by the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Masterpieces were then acquired from China's ceramic capitals as Jingdezhen, Yixing, Foshan, etc. The collection reflects the artistic exploration by contemporary Chinese potters, and may help to illustrate, in one way or another, the current development of this age-old art form in a nation with a long past, open to the world, and towards a new millennium.

Since its debut in 1997, the exhibition has toured Spain, United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Italy, France, Czech, Austria and Bulgaria, and has been widely acclaimed by most of the visitors and ceramic art lovers.
