The 5th Int'l Johannes Brahms Choir  Competition

 

Four Chinese teams took part in the Festival, including Shenzhen Senior High School Lily Children's Choir, Diocesan Boys' School Senior Choir and Diocesan Schools Choral Society from Hong Kong, St. Paul's College Choir from Hong Kong, and Yi-Phone Ladies Chorus from Chinese Taipei. Professor Li Xilin from the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, said China was invited to be part of the jury.

This year's Johannes Brahms Grand Prize Winner goes to Shenzhen Senior High School Lily Children's Choir, with a prize of 2,000 €Euros presented. The choir earned extremely high marks for their sensational voices, which greatly surprised all the juries and audience. They won first place in the Children's Choirs and Folklore Categories, and were awarded a Gold VIII Diploma.

The Diocesan Boys' School Senior Choir was crowned Category Winner of the G2 Category (Youth Choirs of Equal Voices) and awarded a Gold VII Diploma. In addition, they were awarded a special adjudicators award for Outstanding Interpretation of a piece by Schubert.

The Diocesan Schools Choral Society came second in their Category (Mixed Youth Choirs) by a margin of 0.2 marks. They were awarded a Gold V Diploma and qualified to compete at the Category Winners Concert.

Congratulations must also be extended to Ronnie Kay-yen Cheng, Dean of Culture and Conductor of both choirs, for being awarded one of the two Conductor's Prizes in Wernigerode this year.

The Yi-Phone Ladies Chorus also scored high in the competition. They were awarded a Gold VI Diploma in the Folklore Category.

Apart from the actual competition, there was a wealth of encounter concerts, consultation sessions, and opportunities for concerts. The competition takes place every two years.
