Samarkand's Registan Square will host the Sixth International Music Festival Sharq Taronalari ("Melodies of the East") from August 24-31.
The festival's chief director, Bahodir Yuldashev, said the event serves to preserve, propagate and develop unique national art music to an Oriental audience. This year also marks the 16th anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence, which is being celebrated concurrently with the jubilee of Samarkand. Participants from 54 countries will attend meetings, conferences, competitions and concerts at the festival. Participants will also have the chance to perform songs from their homelands in a "best national song performance" contest.
