Chinese and Western culture classics blended together there, over several generations. A lot of buildings of European styles still stand stately in Harbin. Exquisite buildings cover almost all of Zhongyang Street. They range from Byzantine style to Baroque style to literature and art revivalist style. So the city of Harbin is also called "Small Eastern Paris" and "Eastern Moscow."
Women and Children's Department Store
The arched windows are typical of the Byzantine style popular in Europe during the Middle Ages. Built in 1934, the store was a shoe shop owned by a Czech. After the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, the shop became a specialty shop for women and children. Now, it remains the biggest specialty shop along Zhongyang Street. With a good variety of commodities the street has attracted some world famous specialty chains to set up branches down here, such as Crocodile and Bossini.
