In Chinese territory, the western region encompasses twelve provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, including Shan’xi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Chongqing, etc. The region with a vast expanse of land boasts a time-honored history and rich cultural tradition. In a fairly long period of time in history, it hosted China’s political, economic and cultural center. At the threshold of the new millennium, the Chinese government made a strategic decision of shifting the focus of the national economic development to its western region by increasing the investment in and rendering preferential policy to the region so as to give full play to the talents in developing the regional economy. The western region is now a land of hope.
