A dance calligraphic

Li sent his calligraphy as a gift to China's embassy in London after his live performance to mark the 2012 Olympics.

He said it was a worthwhile effort to help Europeans better understand Chinese history and culture.

Li's most recent performance was during the London Olympic Games in the Sadler's Wells Theatre on Aug 10. In addition to Chinese music, he also had the calligraphy interpreted by modern ballet dancers from Britain, making for a blend of totally different cultures.

"Chinese calligraphy is at the heart of traditional Chinese culture, when combined with modern dance the result is a stunning synergy of Eastern and Western cultures," said the venue's official website.

"As the initiator of music calligraphy, Li has introduced a new concept in the industry. Though some theoretical issues need to be profoundly discussed, the spirit of exploration itself has a certain research value due to the innovation," noted Shen Xiaojun, a famed calligraphy theorist.

While Li believes what he is passing on the ancient art of cursive script, adding music created a new era.
