According to costume rules of the Qing Dynasty, only the empress, empress dowager and the highest-ranking imperial concubine were entitled to wear the color yellow, because they were the women of the highest status. After climbing up to this position, Zhen Huan was no longer a pure maiden but a solemn and powerful empress dowager.
