Pottery Production From Ethnic Li People

In the inhabitant area of ethnic Li people in Hainan, China’s southernmost province, there is an occupation only for women—pottery production. It is said this means of living for the vulnerable group—compared to men who are physically stronger—makes sure they at least, keep a hand-to-mouth existence while in a tight corner.

Among 980 registered population of the village”Baotu” in Hainan, at least each household had one person mastered this production skill in the past. Currently, few women even know it. Starting from the Neolithic age, the pottery production craft loses its competitive edge gradually after the adoption of machines.

Chinese government makes much more efforts to boost the protection of its valuable traditional culture. In June of 2006, the pottery production technique of the ethnic Li people is listed into China’s national intangible cultural heritage.

The following are some pictures showcasing Li people's pottery production process.
