Main manufacturers and producers of sandalwood fans are in Suzhou, Hangzhou and Guangzhou Cities in China. Suzhou sandalwood fans are a famous traditional art work in Jiangsu Province, begun at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. In the 1920s, there were seven large sandalwood fans workshops including Zhangduoji. In the early period, they mainly made fans for men and later for women.

Suzhou sandalwood fans are characterized with four kinds of patterns which are pulled patterns, pyrographed patterns, carved patterns and painted patterns. They are elegant and beautiful. In the 1980s, the patterns of Suzhou sandalwood fans were as many as 300 categories, and annual output reached 500,000. In 1981, it won second place at the Hundred Flowers Award for Art Works.
