In 1988, Wang came to Beijing and gained experience in the workshops of various master instrument makers. He carved patterns, and studied the different materials used, learning the skills to forge his own career.
In 1993, Wang established the Zhengming Folk Instruments Factory. Besides guqin, guzheng and pipa, he makes instruments such as zhongruan, and yueqin, for which he has won national prizes.
Wang said an instrument's distinctive tone was derived mainly from the wood of which it is made. Selecting material for each part of an instrument was a complex process. For example, where a tree faced the sunshine as it grew, the wood fibers became much looser. Used in an instrument, this portion of wood could increase elasticity of the strings.
