The Ministry of Culture has recently sanctioned the application of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province to establish a national reserve for ethnic cultures.
Such reserves are established in areas of rich historic legacy and highly distinctive cultural value in order to facilitate effective, holistic protection of these intangible cultural heritages.
That in Qiandongnan will be the first national ethnic culture preserve in Guizhou. Qiandongnan’s ethnic minority groups constitute nearly 82 percent of the population with the Miao taking up 41.8 percent and the Dong 31.7 percent.
The reserve is expected to revive the local indigenous culture and boost social and economic development by building a stronger cultural industry.
