After being in Nanjing for two months, I am happy to be adapting to the lifestyle. I feel that my life here is challenging sometimes, but I am content and I know that the challenges I encounter will give me experiences that are beneficial for my Chinese studies and for a future career. When I first came to China, some things were very different and I have had to change my lifestyle slightly. For example, the food is different, I have to speak a different language, and some of the living conditions are not the same as in America. However, I expected these changes to occur, so I was prepared for this change and I knew that I needed to be more flexible and try to adapt quickly. I decided to live in the dorm because it is more convenient, very close to my classes, I can study with classmates, and I can live with my Chinese roommate. I considered living with a host family instead, but now I am glad that I chose to live in the dorm and I think it has just as many benefits as living with a host family does. The hardest part is the language pledge because I often feel that I cannot express myself fully, and I think that other people perceive me as unintelligent because my level of Chinese is not high enough to really say what I mean beyond the surface level. I hope to really improve by the end of the school year so that I can express myself more clearly. Overall, I think Nanjing is a great city to live in and I am glad I chose Nanjing instead of more popular cities like Beijing or Shanghai. Though I have traveled to other cities in China, Nanjing is my favorite by far, because Nanjing’s population is big but not too big, and the city is rich in culture and history.
