Buluotuo Culture

The ritual takes place every year from the 19th day of the second month on the lunar calendar, which is believed to be the birth day of Buluotuo, to March 9 on the lunar calendar.

The scriptures are five-word songs that take the language and form of a poem. The scriptures discuss the formation of the universe, the origin of human beings, farm crops and domestic animals, as well as the customs of people from the primitive ages. They also encourage people to pray, eliminate evils and pursue a happy life. The whole body of the scriptures is ten thousand lines long, which can be divided into three parts: creative myth, ethics and religious taboo.

The scriptures are a combination of myth, religion, ethics and folk customs of the Zhuang ethnic group. The vivid and exquisite descriptions, romantic and exaggerated techniques and straightforward structure demonstrate the originality of the Zhuang people.

Due to the Zhuang people’s hundred-year-old singing tradition, the language is characterized by conciseness, orderliness and readability. A majority of the lost ancient languages of the Zhuang people and religious customs are retained in the scriptures.

An elder Zhuang male is blowing suona, which is a common musical folk instrument in Tianyang.

As an important cradle for the Buluotuo culture, the Ganzhuang Mountain in Tianyang county has recently attracted more and more visitors. Not only domestic visitors of Zhuang, Yao and Miao ethnic groups, but also foreign visitors from Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, who commonly share the Tai-Kadai languages, come to mountain to worship Buluotuo.

Ganzhuang is from the Zhuang ethnic dialect. Gan means grotto, while Zhuang means cave. Therefore, Ganzhuang Mountain means a mountain with grottoes and caves.
