Shaoxing She Xi

Traditionally, a series of worship activities would be held before the performances started. Chicken, fish, meat and other sacrificial food would be put in order on a desk. A ceremony leader would light cradles on the desk, and stick a yellow thin paper on which “The Earth Bodhisattva” was written onto the stage curtains, in the hope the god of earth would bless them good luck and bumper year.

Performers usually staged the local Shao Opera, which was popular in the area. Watching the performances would be a rare treat for local people. As Shao Opera features a bold and unrestrained singing style, people far from the stage could hear the lines clearly.

Children had a lot of fun at She xi, as peddlers selling local snacks from near and far would come to find business.
