The basic exhibitions of the Museum are the natural history and humane history of Hong Kong, displaying mainly the development process of Hong Kong in the past 6,000 years. The exhibitions are divided into three parts: an introduction to the natural environments of Hong Kong; the unearthed relics, ancient stone carvings and ancient kilns to reflect the human activities in the area of Hong Kong; and the process of Hong Kong developed from a small fishing village into a metropolis.
The Museum has collected over 45,000 cultural relics, falling into four categories, namely, the archeology, the local history, the history of folk customs and the natural history. The most well known collections among the archeological category are the items collected by the two Fathers; the main collections in the category of the local history are the historical photos, the earliest of which were taken in the 1860s; the collections among the history of folk customs are the models of the Chinese traditional junk, the fishing equipment, traditional farm tools and articles of everyday use; and the collections of the natural history are mainly the rocks and minerals from various parts of the world, and the butterflies and mollusks frequently seen in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Museum also holds lectures on special topics frequently to introduce the local archeology, folk customs and natural history so as to improve the audience's knowledge and enjoyment in these respects.
