In 1953, the Preparatory Committee of Restoring the Former Site of the Peasant Movement Institute was established with the purpose of renovating and restoring the former site of running the sixth semester for training peasants' movement. In 1954, the administration department of the memorial was established. In 1956, the Memorial of the Former Site of the Peasant Movement Institute Directed by Comrade Mao Zedong was officially founded. In 1957, the memorial was opened to the public. In 1961, the Former Site of the Peasant Movement Institute in Guangzhou was listed as one of the major historical sites under the State protection.
The memorial has collected 1,152 items of historical relics, of which 64 pieces belong to Class One relics, including the badge of the Peasant Movement Institute andthe Collected Works of Peasants' Issuewith Mao Zedong as the editor-in-chief. Also available in the memorial are over 2,000 items of reproductions of the historical relics, over 10,000 photos, around 7,000 pieces of information material and over 10,000 books. Now in addition to the display of the restored site of the sixth semester, there is also a special topic of the Display of the Peasant Movement Institute in Guangzhou. The memorial has compiled and publishedthe Former Site of the Peasant Movement Institute Directed by Comrade Mao Zedong,the Articles on Studying the Peasant Movement Institute in Guangzhou,the Selected Materials of the Peasant Movement in Guangdongandthe Selected Materials of the Peasant Movement Institute in Guangzhou. Up to 1986, the memorial had received visitors of about 11 million person-times.
