Museum of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region

The Museum of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, located at the Chengtian Buddhist Temple in Yinchuan City, is a comprehensive historical museum of provincial level in China. The Museum was prepared in 1959 and officially completed in 1973.

The Museum has collected over 10,000 cultural relics, of which 45 are Class One collection, among which are the ink-stick unearthed from a Han tomb at Guyuan County of Ningxia, the gold-plated copper bull unearthed from a Western Xia (1038-1227) tomb, and a silk banner presented to the leader of the Hui nationality by the Red Army when passing by Guyuan County of Ningxia during the Long March. The overwhelming majority of the relics collected by the Museum were obtained from archeological survey and field excavation with the exception of small quantity of collected items and the items left over through the ages.

The basic exhibitions of the Museum are the Historical Relics of Ningxia, the Relics of Western Xia, the Revolutionary Relics of Ningxia and the Folk Custom Relics of Hui Nationality.

On display at the Historical Relics of Ningxia are over 400 items of collection, including the stone articles and animal fossils left from the Paleolithic Period unearthed at the former site of Shuidonggou in Ningxia, the various kinds of tools of production and articles for daily use left from the Majiayao Culture, The Qi's Culture and the Microlithic Culture; the valuable relics of bronze, jade objects, ceramics, ironware, gold vessel and silverware, articles made of wood or bamboo, tablet inscriptions, brick carvings and currencies and coins.

On display at the Relics of Western Xia are over 200 items of collection, including large stone horses, gold-plated bronze bull, columns carved with dragons, large glazedChiwen(an ornament at either end of the roof ridge of a Chinese-style house), figures of bamboo carvings, and fragmentary tablets in Western Xia writing.  

The Revolutionary Relics of Ningxia uses the form of combining objects with pictures to reflect the early activities of the CPC in Ningxia, the scene of the Chinese Worker-Peasant Red Army under the leadership of Comrade Mao Zedong when passing by Mt. Liupanshan during the Long March, the occasion of founding the Soviet Regime and the first Hui Autonomous Government in Ningxia, and the scenes of supporting the Anti-Japanese War and greeting the liberation by the people of Ningxia during the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War.

The exhibition of the Folk Custom Relics of Hui Nationality introduces the formation, religion, architecture, cultural life, custom of marriage and funeral and daily life of the Hui Nationality with typical relics, photos and models.

The Museum has held temporary exhibitions such as the Exhibition of Painting and Calligraphy of Ming and Qing Dynasties Collected by the Museum, Li Xian's Tomb Unearthed from Guyuan County, the Exhibition of Ningxia Liberation, and the Currencies and Coins through the Ages. The Museum has also edited and publishedthe Concise History of Western Xia,the Brief Introduction to Ningxia Relics,the Data Collection of Dangxiang and Western Xia,the Collection of Fragmentary Tablets Found at Mausoleum Area of Western Xia,the Relics of Western Xia,the Traces of Ancient Great Wall in Ningxia,the Scenic Spots and Historical Sites of Ningxia,the Ancient Relics of Ningxia,the Ancient Pagodas of Ningxia,the Collection of Local Historical Data of Ningxiaandthe Collection of Historical Data of Red Army's West March in Ningxia.
