During Spring Festival this year I had a great experience and learned many things about this marvelous festival by attending the Spring Festival celebration held in one of the Chinese restaurants. It was held with the presence of the Chinese ambassador in Sri Lanka and I met many Chinese people who live in Sri Lanka and many little Chinese kids as well. It was very amazing to engage in activities such as Chinese singing competitions, dancing and Chinese quiz competitions. For the first time in my life I heard a real, beautiful Chinese traditional opera, which is really marvelous indeed. It was sung by a Chinese person and it encouraged me to sing opera one day. There was a dance performed by the Chinese teachers of our institute. They were dressed in traditional Sri Lankan clothes and were dancing a very famous traditional dance in Sri Lanka. Their dance was amazing indeed. And on the other hand, Sri Lankan students performed Chinese songs. The friendship between China and our motherland is very well.

Really that festival celebration was a bridge that connects the two countries. We all shared the Chinese culture, traditions, customs and beliefs. The Chinese kids were really enjoyable and they became friends of ours immediately. We also watched a really scary kung fu show presented by some Chinese people, which highlighted the Chinese identity. There also was a game to make Chinese dumplings. From that we learned how to make them. After the ceremony they offered us dumplings made by our own hands. We received many gifts related to the New Year, specially the Hong Bao (red envelopes) with money, just like Chinese kids receive on New Year’s Eve. So we all experienced almost a real Chinese New Year. Many traditional food items were there to taste as well. They were very delicious. It was undoubtedly a valuable experience for me as a student who is learning the Chinese language and about the Chinese culture. There I saw the Chinese culture and the way they celebrate and enjoy New Year’s Eve. It was really charming and beautiful. It also made me love China and also the Chinese people more and more. I hope to discover more about the culture and I wish that I will win a chance to go there and also to celebrate a festival like this in China with many Chinese people one day.
